HEART VALVE DISEASE CAN BE QUIET…TOO QUIET

In some cases, there may be no symptoms of heart valve disease until it progresses to heart valve failure (severe aortic stenosis). That means you could feel perfectly fine and still be in danger. That’s why it’s so important to know your level of risk.

THERE IS NO SINGLE CAUSE FOR HEART VALVE DISEASE

Even one risk factor can raise your chances of getting it. Older age, high blood pressure, and family history all increase your risk. Understanding the different causes and if you are at risk will help you and your doctor act if one of your heart valves needs to be replaced.

A HEART MURMUR MIGHT BE THE FIRST AND ONLY SIGN. DON'T IGNORE IT

Your doctor will listen for heart murmurs with a stethoscope during your yearly physical exam. Heart murmurs are distinct whooshing sounds, which can be both the first sign of heart valve disease and an early warning for heart valve failure. If your doctor detects a murmur, you’ll need an echocardiogram (echo) to diagnose whether it’s a problem that can become dangerous.

HEART VALVE DISEASE SYMPTOMS CAN BE HARD TO NOTICE...YOU SHOULD STILL GET TO KNOW THEM

Symptoms could signal that you not only have heart valve disease, but that it has progressed to heart valve failure.
