Risk Factors

  • Aged 65 and over
  • Family history
  • Metabolic risk factors
  • Bicuspid aortic valve
  • Mitral valve prolapse

Certain Health Conditions & Medical Treatments*

  • Rheumatic fever
  • Infective endocarditis or inflammation in the heart
  • Heart attack
  • Diabetes
  • Elevated lipoprotein
  • Heart failure
  • Arrhythmia
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Marfan syndrome
  • Carcinoid tumor
  • Autoimmune conditions such as lupus

*Due to pacemaker or internal defibrillator implantation or radiation therapy to the chest.

If a patient over the age of 65 has any of the risks or health conditions above, a routine echocardiogram can provide a baseline for their heart valve health and detect early disease.
